In this video, Dr. Uchenna O. Umeh, anesthesiologist at Hospital for Special Surgery, demonstrates how to perform a spinal block. Spinals and epidurals are used very often at Hospital for Special Surgery for any surgery below the waist. These blocks are performed once patients have received some sedation through their intravenous line. Patients often have no recollection of undergoing a spinal or epidural. Once sedated, the anesthesiologist will either sit the patient upright or place them on their side for the anesthetic.
